Screw Being Liked

Screw being liked. Seriously.

Now before you get mad at me, understand where I’m coming from.

I’m not talking about being liked by family or true friends. I actually hope that you’re liked by those people. I’m talking about being liked by people you don’t even know (like random Instagram followers, the person in the checkout line behind you, Ryan Reynolds, etc.). I mean, why would you care what somebody else, who has no rapport with you whatsoever, cares about you? It doesn’t make any sense!

Yet and still, people want it. People want the Instagram and Twitter followers, they want the Facebook likes, and they want to be beloved by their school peers.

Now wanting to be liked in and of itself isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Actually, it’s human nature. The tricky part comes in what people do to be liked: they change who they are.

You see it in every brick and mortar school, on various sitcoms and movies, and even in the workplace. People change how they act so that they can fit in and be liked by the “cool kids.”

But why do this? Why waste your time? Why pretend to be someone that you’re not? Besides, oftentimes the people you see as the cool kids think you’re one of the cool kids. (Don’t believe me? Listen to Echosmith’s Cool Kids. They got it exactly right.)

You think that Bill Gates cares what random people think of him? You think the Rock or Kevin Hart give a rip? Or how about LeBron James? Kobe? MJ? No, no, no, no, no, and no. Sure, they might care about how the general public perceives them, but not how individuals, or even certain groups of people do.

That’s why I stand resolved (sorry for the pause in the sentence, but look at me! Sounding all debate-ish and such…) that you, me, and everyone should screw being liked. If you want to be liked that much, make sure that you like you. If you don’t like yourself, you’re always going to be worried about what other’s think of you. If you do like yourself, you won’t give a rip about how they see you.

Now if you want to be mad at me then be mad at me. You’re not going to be keeping me up at night.  I’m just being me and telling you what I believe.

Screw being liked. Seriously.
